Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Are your teachers Western or Chinese?
A: Starbugs' teachers come from Western countries. Starbugs secondary support teachers come from China. All Starbugs instructors are equipped with continuous trainings in best practices for teaching ESL.

Q: My child is a first-time English learner. Can he/she adjust to an English educational environment?
A: Children, overall, are able to successfully adapt to change faster than adults. On average, with both school and parental support, children adapt to their new Starbugs environment after attending their first four classes.

Q: What is the standard profile of your teachers?
A: All Starbugs' teachers come from Western countries, with the majority coming from North America. All instructors have two or more years of successful classroom teaching experience. Our instructors hold advanced degrees and certificates or are working towards higher degrees. Every Starbugs' teacher goes through rigorous screening and partakes in continuous training. Last but not least, Starbugs instructors show a genuine love for teaching children.

Q: What teaching materials do you use? Do students have tests and homework?
A: Starbugs traditional reading program is comprised of classic children's literature books that are carefully selected from US schools' required and popular-reading book lists. Books from our traditional reading program are systematized by US grade-levels. Starbugs' K-12 textbook program uses a series of enriching language arts texts that align with the US Common-Core learning standards. The textbook series uses more digital media for supplemental learning. Starbugs lesson plans are original, well-crafted and detailed. The Starbugs lesson materials combine effectively-researched teaching practices with result-oriented learning methods and cater to the distinct needs of the Chinese  student. In-class quizzes are given. Major exams are administered at the end of every term. Review homework is assigned and it is mandatory.

Q: Will just two hours of English class per week enable my child to achieve the highest level of language progress?

A: No. It takes consistent practice to achieve optimal results. That is why it is important for parents to review the weekly learning materials with the children on a regular basis in order to gain the best results.

Q: We do not speak English well. How can we support our child at home?
A: There are many ways to support your child's learning progress. You can supervise your children after school to ensure that they complete their homework. You can make full use of the supplemental review and audio storybook materials that Starbugs provides for review. You can “play in English” with your child by using English board games such as Scrabble, watching English cartoons, singing karaoke to English songs, reading simple English storybooks, talking about picture-books before bedtime or learning a simple English sentence every day. Lastly, we welcome all families to go to your child's instructor for more review ideas and suggestions.

Q: My child is only two years old. What is the entry-level age for Starbugs students?
A: Starbugs entry-level age is three years old.

Q: My child is in the first grade and is just starting to learn English. How will my child be placed?

A: Starbugs placement exams and programs are based on both English level abilities and age. Starbugs recognizes that each child is unique. Therefore, we provide specialized learning solutions for our students such as 1:1 tutorials, short-term intensive group lessons, oral English courses and phonics-focused classes to ensure that each student reaches the target pace.

Q: Relative to other children's English training institutions, what are Starbugs' most significant features?
A: Our biggest feature is our quality reading curriculum that is supported by a talented teaching team and a dedicated staff. Students who are continuous learners at Starbugs have a track record of success in improving their English vocabulary, reading comprehension skills, verbal analysis and phonics speaking and reading abilities. The proof of their success is evidenced in many ways, including after scoring on America's Diagnostic Online Reading Assessment exams that compare Starbugs students' English levels to US students of the same age. Please ask a customer service representative to tell you more about our exams.

Q: My goal is for my child to be fluent in English. Can Starbugs help  my child achieve this?
A: From a young age, children learn language through imitation and daily practice. Starbugs courses do serve as a vital catalyst for English language fluency, however in order for your child to become fluent in English, every environment that your child lives and learns in must have English teaching tools that your child uses daily to imitate, activate and advance his or her English knowledge. For more suggestions on how to incorporate English learning into your home, we encourage you to speak to a Starbugs teacher or customer service representative.

Q: Can Starbugs help children improve their English test scores?
A: Starbugs primary goal is not to teach English for general test results, but to teach English for comprehensive and long-lasting learning results. Yes, consistent progress through Starbugs reading courses does result in higher English test scores for students. However, results don't always show immediately and require patience. True success takes time.

Q: My child loves to learn English through play and watching movies. Does Starbugs provide classes that use multimedia and English apps and games to attract the child?
A: Starbugs, like many fine public and private schools, prides itself in putting academics first in regards to English education. Our specialty-trained teachers use a variety of creative and entertaining practices to capture the interest of the child. Although some multimedia is used in the classroom, it is not relied upon as the primary teaching tool. The teacher, the textbooks and the lesson plan serve as the best tools for learning.

Q: What is Starbugs' foreign-teacher retention rate?

A: Due to a variety of reasons, including cultural differences, language challenges and environmental factors, Starbugs' foreign teacher retention rate is not 100%. However, our teacher retention rates safely fall into the medium of most international schools in Shanghai. Starbugs does not expect all teachers to remain stable with us. What Starbugs does expect is for the quality of our curriculum to remain stable and consistently improve in it's learning effectiveness for your child. As members of the Starbugs team, our instructors are provided with strong staff support, competitive salaries and friendly working environments to ensure that they are happy in the classroom and thereby most effective when teaching your children.

Q: My child is small and easily gets sick. Do you provide make-up classes?
A: Yes. Starbugs offers a set amount of “add in classes” in which students can attend courses that are already running. Starbugs does not offer 1-on-1 make up tutorials.

Q: My child has been in a course for a few months. Why do I feel like there is no obvious effect?

A: The way to truly learn a language, especially a second or third language, is gradual and requires patience. However, a crash course in language memorization or mimicking is different. Results of crash courses can be seen quickly but disappear just as quickly and don't measure a student's real knowledge. The benefits of learning English through Starbugs' reading programs is that it triggers the student's creativity, imagination, analytical abilities and emotions all at the same time, causing the learner to understand English in a more in-depth and comprehensive way. This method eventually produces farther reaching, longer-lasting results. If your child  isn't speaking a huge amount of English a few months after the first Starbugs lesson and the teacher's feedback is that nothing is wrong, rest assured that your child is consistently learning English. A leap in oral output may take longer because the learning process is natural and more complex. On average, students new to Starbugs usually show very impressive leaps in learning between one to three years after their first day of class.

Q: If I am not satisfied with the registration fee for the course, can I request a refund?
A: Yes, Starbugs honors a 100% registration refund guarantee.
